An APP career pathway

Beverley Gorbutt is a Senior MSK Physiotherapist and Clinical Mentor at Ascenti. We caught up with her to discuss her career progression into an APP.

Check out her answers to the questions below to gain insight into what an APP career can look like at Ascenti.

What route did you decide to take?

Ascenti offered me the opportunity to enrol on an Apprenticeship MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice. I choose to take a hybrid approach and attended lectures one day per week at Leeds Beckett University.

Can you tell us a bit more about your time on the course?

As well as attending university lectures once a week I also spent one day of my week gaining experience with an FCP and APP patient case load. At Ascenti they give you an APP clinical mentor who will meet with me weekly to discuss all my patient cases and answer any questions I might have.

Throughout the 3 year course, I had to complete a specific number of patient-facing hours and a certain number of taught lectures to attend. All these tasks were integrated into my normal 40 hour working week, which still allowed me to have my free time at the weekends.

How has Ascenti supported you throughout your career?

Ascenti have been really supportive throughout my whole career. During my course Ascenti released me from my usual working diary as agreed with Leeds Beckett University in order to allow me to complete my required hours and content. In addition, I also had two weekly de-briefs and regular shadowing opportunities with senior clinicians which helped me gain experience. Ascenti also holds FCP and APP group meetings weekly covering a range of relevant topics and cases for discussion which I was able to attend to extend my knowledge in this sector of physiotherapy.

How does Ascenti support those who want to become an APP/FCP?

I feel Ascenti fully supports anyone who wants to become an APP or FCP. They offer a lot of opportunities to help suit each individual in becoming an APP or FCP by offering the choice to complete it as a university taught MSc, a portfolio route or a hybrid method. Also, Ascenti continues the support during your training by having senior clinicians on hand that are always keen to help and provide advice where needed.

Why should someone consider joining Ascenti?

Ascenti are a forward thinking company that values the clinical development of its clinicians. Whether you are considering developing your career as an FCP/APP or another specialism then the clinical development team at Ascenti will be there to support you the whole way.
