Back in October 2022 I submitted my application for the London Marathon which was endorsed by Macmillan as they are Ascenti’s charity partner and I was lucky enough to secure a space in the race.
It meant a lot to me and my family to be able to raise money for Macmillan, as I unfortunately lost my Mum to Ovarian Cancer two years ago and Macmillan nurses were vital in her care when battling the illness for four years.
Previously, I have fundraised for Macmillan and with them being our charity partner it created the perfect opportunity to raise more money for such a fantastic cause and to do so in memory of my mum.
This is going to be my first marathon, however, I have completed half marathons, Spartan races and Tough Mudders before. Needless to say, when I completed the half marathon, the last thing I would’ve wanted to do is go around and do it again. This experience is going to be the biggest mental and physical challenge I will face.
My typical day-to-day training has consisted of long runs with gradually increasing the mileage and currently I have tapered down to rest as the big day approaches. During training, I reached a point where running became enjoyable. I wouldn’t go as far as saying I ‘have the bug’, although it is nice to get some fresh air, clear your head and listen to a podcast or two.
Initially, I thought the marathon would be in October, like it had been previously due to COVID, so as you can imagine I had slight angst when I realised it was in April. However, as the marathon gets closer, I am getting more and more excited and everyone I know who has completed it describes it as a ‘truly incredible experience’.
My only goal in regard to this marathon is to ultimately finish. I’m venturing into uncharted territory with 26.2 miles, however my training is geared up to me running a 4.5 hour marathon. Sprint, limp or crawl, I will be getting over that finishing line.
Fundraising is going really well, however it has been challenging. With the cost of living and the financial pressures people are experiencing, every donation is even more meaningful.
Any donation, big or small, is really appreciated and will help me get closer towards my goal for Macmillan. If you would like to donate you can via my JustGiving page here.
